OCSA Graduation Performance Features Students' School Years in Taiwan, Paying Tribute to Their Families' Support
NCUE Overseas Chinese Student Association (OCSA) recently presented their graduation performance, a stage play "Echoes", where they looked back on the four years of their studies in Taiwan. The play incorporated various forms of performance, including guitar playing and dance, and even the original heartfelt conversation between students and their family members over long-distance phone calls. During the curtain call, the students couldn't help but shed tears as they expressed their gratitude for their families' unwavering support during their time studying in Taiwan. Dean Hon Man Lee of the International Office stated that new graduates are always welcome to come back to the campus and witness the beautification efforts made in recent years. He also emphasized the school's commitment to recruiting more high-quality overseas students and nurturing their potential which sparks hope for their futures.
"Echoes" symbolizes the phone calls made by students to their families during their time in Taiwan. From feeling homesick in their freshman year, being too busy to think about home in their sophomore year, facing various life challenges without telling their families in their junior year, to realizing how time flies, and learning to share their daily lives and feelings with their families in their senior year. Each phone ring is like a call to return home, and it is these moments that make this play so special.
The play also reflects on the lives of overseas students during their university years, including their initial struggles, the heavy academic workload, diverse part-time job experiences, and busy club activities. One scene in the play presents recorded phone conversations between the students and their families, where parents express their concerns and affection for their children, a touching moment that resonates with the changing images on the stage.
During the curtain call, video messages of graduation blessings from friends and family in students' home countries were played on stage. Seeing their long-lost family members on the screen brought many of the students to tears. Subsequently, the students each delivered their graduation speeches, expressing their gratitude for the bonds formed during their time at NCUE and thanking the International Office and Student Psychological Counseling & Guidance Center for their care and assistance. Many students also loudly declared their love and appreciation to their friends and family in the audience, shedding tears as they spoke.
The OCSA holds this event every year on the night of the graduation ceremony, allowing friends and family who have traveled from afar to relive the international study journey with the students and make up for the long periods of separation over the four years. In his thank-you speech, the student representative, Xueji Chen, quoted the description of Paris by the writer Ernest Miller Hemingway as a moveable feast, and the OCSA graduation performance is like such a feast, recording the beautiful memories of overseas students at NCUE, providing a lifelong source of inexhaustible life experiences.
