Chinese Preparatory Students in International Foundation Program at NCUE Language Center Achieve 88% Pass Rate on TOCFL
The Chinese preparatory students in the International Foundation Program at NCUE’s Language Center achieved impressive results in the 2024 TOCFL (Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language) test. Among the 12 Indonesian students, the pass rate for TOCFL Level 2 (A2) reached 88%. Additionally, 43% of the students passed the more advanced Level 3 (B1), including 7 Indonesian students and 2 Vietnamese students, totaling 21 successful candidates. These results not only reflect the hard work of the students but also highlight the excellent teaching quality and effectiveness of the Chinese language courses offered by the International Foundation Program.
To help students make significant progress in their Chinese language proficiency, the International Foundation Program recruited professional Chinese language teachers certified with the "Ministry of Education's Certificate for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language". These experienced teachers have designed a rich curriculum with diverse and engaging teaching methods. The courses cover listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, while also incorporating aspects of Taiwanese culture, geography, ecology, and industry, enabling students to master the practical application of Chinese. Moreover, the International Foundation Program arranges online TOCFL mock tests each semester, helping students familiarize themselves with the test format and improve their test-taking skills, leading to these gratifying results.
According to Student Lee, who is from Indonesia, the courses in the International Foundation Program not only taught the students useful vocabulary and sentences for everyday life but also helped them retain and reinforce what they learned through presentations and daily quizzes. The teachers provided individual guidance after class, which allowed them to fluently handle various situations in daily life within just a few months.
Student Jiang from Indonesia mentioned, “The arrangement of TOCFL mock tests in the computer lab helped us get familiar with the question types and time management of the TOCFL test in advance, especially in the reading comprehension section, where my accuracy has improved significantly. Moreover, the role-playing activities guided by the teachers in class have boosted my confidence in listening and speaking.”
Student Liu, also from Indonesia, stated that the courses here cover various life scenarios, teaching students how to order drinks, meals, shop with an EasyCard, and use Moovo bikes, as well as cultural courses that help them integrate into life in Taiwan. The dedicated teaching methods not only allowed them to gain knowledge in class but also helped them experience the practicality and fun of the language in everyday life.
Professor Tsung-Hsien Ko, Director of the International Foundation Program and a professor in the Department of Electronic Engineering at NCUE, said, “This year’s outstanding achievements are attributed to the hard work of our Chinese language teachers and colleagues in the program. We would also like to extend special thanks to the support and assistance from various departments, which ensured the smooth progress of this project. Looking forward, we will continue to maintain this high standard and hope that, after graduating from the Department of Electronic Engineering, students can successfully enter related industries and contribute to Taiwan’s industry with diverse cultural perspectives and professional skills.”
