NCUE Online Training Course for Aspiring Mandarin Instructors Set to Begin
To promote the global development of Mandarin education, NCUE’s Language Center will host the second round of its online training course for aspiring Mandarin instructors from November 11 to November 15, 2024. This program aims to equip students interested in Mandarin teaching with fundamental teaching skills and strengthen their practical abilities in international teaching settings. Additionally, through NCUE's Mandarin teaching project in collaboration with partner universities in Indonesia, six students have already been recommended for teaching internships, and another selection round is planned for early 2025. Interested students are encouraged to watch for further announcements.
In August 2024, NCUE’s Language Center successfully organized an online Mandarin teacher training course in cooperation with the Jakarta Taiwan Education Center and the Taipei Economic and Trade Office, Indonesia. The program, aimed at enhancing Mandarin teaching skills for Indonesian teachers, featured expert instructors from NCUE and other institutions. Hsiao-Ching Yang, Assistant Professor in Department of Chinese and Chief of the Division of Chinese at NCUE’s Language Center, joined the program, and Dr. Hon-Man Lee, Dean of the Office of International and Cross-Strait Affairs (OICA), delivered an opening remark. The course was highly rated by participating Indonesian teachers, underscoring NCUE’s professional expertise and impact in international Mandarin education.
Additionally, the OICA and the Language Center is advancing the Global Mandarin AI (Assistant Instructor) Program, where NCUE students are assigned to Indonesian schools as Mandarin teaching assistants for 6 to 12 months. The program enhances students’ hands-on teaching experience while helping them develop a wide range of instructional strategies. In February 2024, two exchange students from NCUE began internships teaching Mandarin at NCUE’s partner university, ITB Carnegie in Indonesia. Following another selection in May, four additional students are scheduled to teach at ITB Carnegie in 2024 and 2025.
Notably, the OICA faculty visited ITB Carnegie to evaluate teaching and living conditions for interns, ensuring safety and facilitating the Global Mandarin AI Program collaboration. Dean Lee noted that Mandarin teaching assistants receive a monthly stipend ranging from $200 to $600 USD, with ITB Carnegie providing accommodations, breakfast and lunch, airport transfers, and local transportation. NCUE also subsidizes professional training, allowing student interns to experience overseas living and teaching, benefiting their future careers.
The upcoming second round of the online training course for aspiring Mandarin instructors builds on the success of previous projects. Course topics include phonics instruction, grammar correction, cross-cultural communication, and lesson design—all essential skills for effective Mandarin teaching. This program not only targets students aspiring to teach Mandarin but also offers additional professional development for students participating in the Global Mandarin AI Program.
With a skilled teaching team and extensive international collaboration experience, NCUE’s Language Center will continue to promote global Mandarin education and nurture outstanding Mandarin teaching talent. Students interested in Mandarin teaching are encouraged to apply and contribute to the future of Mandarin education.
